Objective of the Exhibit

The interactive Puppet Academy exhibit presents the unlimited and never-ending world of puppets, its meaning, history and present. You will learn to perceive puppets as if they were live beings.

The exhibit was created by Sladovna Písek o.p.s. in cooperation with the Museum of West Bohemia in Pilsen and with the following theatres: Alfa from Pilsen, Malé divadlo from České Budějovice, Naivní divadlo from Liberec and Divadlo Drak from Hradec Králové.

Basic Description of the Exhibit

The Puppet Academy is an exhibition where visitors can learn about the world of puppets from many angels. In the first part, visitors become students of the Puppet Academy; they will travel back in time to the ancient puppet times, find out how many different types of puppets there are and learn to operate the puppets and get to know them. They also have an opportunity to use the puppeteer workshop and to make a small puppet and put it on the exhibition. In the second part, they can have a look at the professional work of four successful Czech puppet theatres: Alfa from Pilsen, Malé divadlo from České Budějovice, Naivní divadlo from Liberec and Divadlo Drak from Hradec Králové.

The exhibition also presents a programme for children under the same title. When the children pass the programme, they become puppet experts, with theoretical and practical knowledge, with a diploma and an experience from a different world – the world of puppets. The Alfa theatre also presents the scenic clock from their performance “Soused Kašpar – soused Škrhola” that are four meters high and have a complicated internal mechanism for operating the scenes.

The environment created on the basis of five successful performances of well-known Czech puppet theatres will teach you about the beginning of the history of puppets, what string puppets and hand puppets looked like in the past, what they were used for, how they differed from the modern ones and what roles they played in the evolution of humankind.

The current interactive exhibits are traditionally accompanied by programmes for schools prepared by Sladovna. The programmes are designed in a playful form and they use the method of experience and situational learning with the aim to introduce the topic of the exhibition to the children in a comprehensible way.

The programmes for schools are designed in compliance with the Framework Education Programmes for the individual levels of education.

Programmes for school groups offer students a unique opportunity to enter a prestigious school – the Puppet Academy, which is the gateway into the magical world of puppets. The students of the school will become experts in puppet theatre. Under the supervision of our experienced professors, they will learn about the individual types of puppets and how to operate them. In the history lesson, they will learn about the beginning of puppets and what the situation looked like in Bohemia. They will make their own puppets in the workshop. They can then practice their puppetry skills on eight scenes of our professional puppet theatres.

The study programme of the Puppet Theatre offers the following subjects:
  • ABCs of theatrical terms
  • Puppetry
  • History of puppetry focusing on the transformations of the Czech puppet theatre
  • Workshop
  • Puppet theatre designing

Learning in the Puppet Academy is adjusted to the age of the students and their individual talent dispositions. The main objective of the educational activity is: strengthening relationship to the theatre and puppets, motivation to own creativity, breaking barriers and templates in the artistic and creative thinking of children, freedom of creation on the example of the puppet theatre; development and strengthening of individual talent dispositions.
